Ingrid Bergman by Lou Rie
ABOUT THIS COLLECTION
The Divas of the Big Screen collection features portraits of nine women whose images filled hearts and minds on movie and TV screens and in printed media in the 20th century. They broke with outdated notions of womanhood and femininity to become icons of modern glamour, style, and independence. Two are still going strong—Jane Fonda and Isabella Rossellini—while another, Bettie Page, made her mark as a model. With vivid color compositions and high contrasts using expressive fluorescent paint, these paintings reflect the lights and shadows in the lives of their subjects. They all struggled against a “star system” that insisted on making their personal lives as important as their acting.

ABOUT THE ARTWORKS
Ingrid Bergman
Whether in such films as “Casablanca” (1942) or “Notorious,” (1946) the Swedish actress brought an inner radiance to the screen. Her Hollywood image as a perfect woman clashed with her private life when she eloped with Italian film director Roberto Rossellini while married. She eventually returned to favor, but worked mostly in Europe.
