Physical Training for Businessmen by A.B. Phelan

Physical Training for Businessmen by A.B. Phelan

ABOUT THIS COLLECTION

American author Harrie Irving Hancock believed “correct carriage and wide-awake, impressive appearance” were the keys to success and could be produced with proper physical exercises. Each illustration is carefully photographed to make “every movement plain to the beholder,” wrote Hancock, adding that the practitioner will achieve “masculine poise” in the way he “walks, talks, and meets others.” Forgotten today, the enormously prolific Hancock wrote mostly boy’s adventure tales.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Hancock singles out the “amazing photographic record of the model’s performances” by photographer A.B. Phelan, about whom very little is known. “The method of making these unique examples of camera work is Mr. Phelan’s own invention now first set before readers,” Hancock proudly declared. It’s not clear if slow shutter speeds alone account for the ghostly trails of each movement or if some trails were enhanced in the darkroom afterward. Hancock insists they are “the nearest approach possible to a moving picture on a single plate.”
