Queen City Ink Adverts (12 artworks)
ABOUT THIS COLLECTION
The Inland Printer was an influential magazine at the turn of the century and a focal point of American illustration from 1890 to 1940. In the early 1900's, Augustus L. Jansson did a series of at least 40 ads for the Queen City Ink Company that were published in the magazine, some of which are offered here. They include a troupe of animals in the “Ink Beasts Parade,” named the “Inkydinks.” These outstanding examples of advertising illustration have an Art Deco feel, but he made them between 1903-1908.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in a family of Swedish immigrants and raised in West Somerville, Mass., Jansson (1866-1931) was a commercial artist and a cartoonist active between 1900 and 1910, whose work appeared in comic strips, book illustrations, advertising, and on postcards. He even produced a range of designs for a set of Wedgwood dinnerware in England. His work was bold and simple, and looked like face card designs for weird and wonderful playing cards. He did a lot of one-shot campaigns as an illustrator, which makes it hard to appreciate how unique and ahead of his time he was.
