ABOUT THIS COLLECTION  
These illustrative plates come from “The History of the Caribby-Islands: viz. Barbados, St Christophers, St Vincents, Martinico, Dominico, Barbouthos, Monserrat, Mevis, Antego, &c. in all XXVIII” (1666), by Charles de Rochefort (1605-83), and translated by John Davies.. This early study of the Caribbean is an English translation of a French work published anonymously in 1658. De Rochefort, the original author, identified himself in subsequent editions of the book. Not much is known about the author. The available evidence suggests he was a Protestant pastor sent to be a minister or chaplain to French-speaking Protestants in the Caribbean. The work is in two parts, the first dealing with the geographical features and the second with the people of the Caribbean.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
The 17th century was part of the Age of Exploration and colonial expansion. These illustrations were made to accompany text by Charles de Rochefort, who wrote about his observations in a journey to various Caribbean islands, but whether he was also the illustrator is unknown. These beautifully rendered drawings demonstrate the increasing quality and accuracy of scientific illustrations emerging at the time. A publication like this fed a growing curiosity in Europe about the New World of the Americas.
